Exxon Valdez

On March 24, 1989, the Exxon Valdez (top) ran aground on a reef after leaving the Port of Valdez in the upper part of Alaska’s Prince William Sound. The tanker was carrying about 53 million gallons of crude oil, of which about 11 million spilled within just a few days. Teams work to clean a beach fouled by oil (middle). Pooled oil from the spill is shown in rocks along the shoreline (bottom).
