From Streetcar City to Automobile City

Compare these two photographs of major streets in downtown Detroit, the one on the top probably from the late 1910s or the 1920s, the one on the bottom probably from the late 1940s. The electric streetcars so prominent in the earlier photograph are absent from the second, which instead contains automobiles and buses only.
